Cymatone Project

2022

About

The Cymatone Project was an immersive & interactive art installation that offered participants a unique auditory and visual experience. Hosted inside a Portuguese Villa in Gouveia, this transformative event combined ancient wisdom, cymatics technology, and collective vocal expression. Participants stood in a circle around a central pool of water placed atop a speaker. Guided by vocal coaches Marc Drost and Reachel Singh, the group harmonised their voices, sending vibrations into the water. These vibrations created mesmerising cymatic patterns, which were illuminated with lasers and projected onto the ceiling, immersing the audience in a radiant display of light and sound.

Inspired by the works of Dr. Hans Jenny, Masaru Emoto, and the healing potential of cymatics, this installation explored biofeedback, resonance, and altered states of consciousness. Participants reported feelings of deep healing, connection, and transformation.

I am a science journalist, author and events producer in London.
I first became familiar with the art and phenomenon of Cymatics thirteen years ago when I ran science events at music festivals in the UK with my former company Guerilla Science. Though I have a science degree and have spent my entire life in the world of live entertainment (my father is a rock promoter and I myself have worked in the industry for most of my life), I had never seen the strange and beautiful patterns that can be created simply with the right combination of sound waves and materials until 2010 at the Secret Garden Party when an artist we commissioned showed us a variety of Chladni patterns. I was absolutely enchanted, and since then have seen artists exhibit cymatic installations at many venues in London and at festivals around the UK.

They never fail to impress and inspire me. However, I have never seen any cymatic art that is remotely comparable to Miss Linton’s. She truly is in a league of her own, and she is absolutely not being hyperbolic when she describes herself as ” a world leader in the field of cymatics and acoustic art”. I was so impressed by her work when I met her in early 2021, I made it a mission to travel to Portugal in April 2021 to see her “cymatone”, a huge and immaculately crafted bronze plate which she has brought around the world to showcase how simple combinations of sound frequencies and water can produce the most dazzling creations. For her event in Portugal she planned to create “An interactive cymatics art experiment where we will tone into a pool of water to create an immersive vibrating cymatics experience”. Moving beyond performance art, she planned to invite the audience to become part of the art itself by singing and chanting, exploring how different vocalisations can produce unique patterns.

As she put it herself in the event description: “Our sound will create ripples and cymatics patterns in the central pool of water which will then be lit and projected onto the ceiling above us. The audience will become immersed in the visual cymatics light vibration of the tone that they are creating.”

I knew I absolutely had to be there, and it absolutely was worth the time and money I invested to make the long, complex trip to rural Portugal to see it. And I can confirm that Miss Linton is supremely capable of planning, coordinating and running extremely complex events with
multiple moving parts and many collaborators.

The world desperately needs more artists and thinkers like Miss Linton who can keep humanity’s cultural heritage alive. Rachael is an internationally recognised artist with a portfolio and skill set that is truly unique.
